Dental X-Rays
What are Dental X-Rays?
Dental x-rays are a very important part of oral exams because they help detect the problems that aren’t visible with an external examination. They can show how deep a cavity penetrates, if the root of a tooth is infected, and whether there is any bone loss or gum loss.
When Should I Get X-Rays?
Unlike traditional x-rays in healthcare, dental x-rays should be performed on a regular schedule because they are meant to catch any dental issues before they become bigger problems. X-rays are generally done with an oral exam and a simple cleaning during your biannual checkup. When done with an oral exam, your dentist will be able to provide treatment options for many issues that may be unseen to the naked eye, like cavities, issues with the root of a tooth, bone loss, or gum loss.
Different Types of X-Rays
When you visit the dentist, they will perform three different x-ray views, a bitewing view, a periapical view, and an occlusal view. Together, all three views will help the dentist understand the full picture of your mouth and any potential issues that may be going on.
- Bitewing views show cavities and bone loss.
- Periapical views show the root structures of each tooth and gum health.
- Occlusal views show the bone structure of the jaw.
